According to Noah Baumbach’s commentary on the DVD, this scene was improvised. All the Pretty Horses was the last book that Noah Baumbach had read at the time. He gave the actors a quick plot summary before shooting the scene. Almost hard to believe.
I need to hunt the web for the short film Conrad and Butler in “Conrad and Butler Take a Vacation.” Also directed by Baumbach and stars Kicking and Screaming cast members Carlos Jacott and John Lehr. It was shot in 2000 and is a feature on the Criterion Collection release of Kicking and Screaming. Just incredible and needs to be seen by any admirers of Carlos Jacott, who is a National Treasure.
